Protecting students in school has become a very important topic in recent years. The goal of putting law enforcement officers in schools was to enhance safety and security. However, the use of School Resource Officers (SROs) is a complex and multi-layered conversation. We have discovered that their presence can have a negative impact on minority and disabled students who may be over-criminalized for normal behavior. While we want to provide a safe academic environment, we also need to realize that SROs could have detrimental effects on the mental and emotional health of students. Therefore, school officials need to have open and honest discussions regarding the appropriateness and effectiveness of SROs in schools. One alternative solution to SROs could be on-campus armed security guards, who are trained to respond to potential emergencies and ensure the safety and security of students and staff. These professionals would have one mission: to protect life and property. The primary goal is to maintain a safe academic environment.
