A mail carrier in Youngstown was robbed of his keys by an armed man while on his route Wednesday. The carrier was delivering mail on foot in the area of Rush Boulevard and Hilton Avenue around 5 p.m.

According to the report, the carrier was approached by a light-skinned black man in his mid-30s who warned him not to die for a key. The carrier initially thought the man was joking, until he was told not to play with him. The mail carrier put his hands up and informed the suspect that his keys were inside his van.

The suspect, who had a gun tucked in his waistband, walked the mail carrier to his van after repeating the warning not to die for a key. Once at the van, the suspect threatened the carrier, saying that if he tried anything, he would be dead. The carrier then handed over the collection key that unlocked the street mailboxes, and the suspect fled west on Hilton Avenue.

On Thursday afternoon, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service announced a reward of up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect(s) involved in the armed robbery of a United States Postal Service letter carrier.
