In recent days, our attention has been drawn towards the legal proceedings against Domestic Terrorist Rachel Marie Powell who, to our surprise, has recently been given a considerable prison sentence as a result of her participation in the Capitol Hill riots that occurred earlier this year on January 6th, 2021. What is unique about this case is the fact that Powell opted to discard her right to a trial by jury and instead elected for a bench trial overseen by Senior Judge Royce C. Lamberth. During the trial, the prosecution presented a multitude of evidence which overwhelmingly demonstrated Powell’s direct involvement in the riot, not limited to the use of a bullhorn and a pipe in breaking the Capitol Hill building windows. Distinct pink hat and black jacket were additional identifying features that played a critical role in pinpointing her presence during the riots. Following the outcome of the trial, Powell was found guilty and sentenced to a significant punishment. Powell will be serving 57 months in prison, completing a 36-month federal supervised release program, and will have to make a restitution payment of $2,753. It is pertinent to note that Powell was previously an active participant in peaceful demonstrations against COVID-19 measures such as the closure of non-essential businesses and mask mandates.
